swarm of sound invites participants to immerse themselves in a dynamic auditory environment where sound and its origin within the space are influenced by the movement and collective interactions of those present. the inspiration for this piece is rooted in my own neurodiversity. i experience overstimulation in loud, crowded environments and find under-stimulating spaces equally challenging. this installation strikes a balance, providing a dynamic environment that responds to the natural human desire for movement and interaction.
the installation emphasizes the philosophy that art is co-created with its audience, inspiring visitors to explore and discover new patterns and experiences. despite intentionally limiting the use of professional video and audio equipment, the installation utilizes minimal and open source tools to create a profound and memorable impact. these constraints not only enhance the creative process but also broaden the installation’s scope for making it accessible to a diverse range of communities. i had the chance to present my work at Alte Münze in berlin during their open door event Sommermünze from the 07.09.24 - 08.09.24.
the conceptualization design and the technical development in its entirety was part of my bachelor thesis. the installation runs on two single board computers. a RPI 4 is running a custom camera-based object tracking algorithm in python without the use of any deep learning models. The sound design, 360 degree panning and digital-to-analog conversion is handled by the bela board + CTAG cap running pure data.
